Chevaline Massacre - A useful reference document.

Note: The Arabic names have been transcribed in a number of ways in the media. If possible the spelling found in official documents in the UK and Sweden has been used below. Arabic women are often referred to with their maiden name e.g. Fashiha Shaban, below the name is given as Fashiha Al-Hilli (Shaban), with the maiden name in parenthesis.

Time & Date: Wednesday 5 September 2012, around 15:30

Place: Lay-by Le Martinet on Route Forestière Domaniale de la Combe d’Iré, Les Bauges, 74210 Doussard, Haute-Savoie, France (3.3 km from the nearest village Chevaline)

Weapon: Luger P06,   Luger manual 

Ammunition: calibre 7,65 mm Parabellum, 21-25 bullets used, Sylvain Mollier shot 5-7 times, the other victims 2 times, the older girl (Zainab) shot once in the shoulder

Emergency call: first registered call 15:48 made by witness Philippe Didierjean/Bossy

Technical evidence: photos taken by the Al-Hilli family in Doussard 15:15 (?) outside  this house in the corner of Rue de la Poste and Route d’Arnand

Witnesses.


Witness 1: William Brett Martin, born 21 June 1959, British originally from Auckland New Zealand, student at St. Kentigern’s College Auckland, living now in Brighton UK, house in Lathuile France (2km from Route Forestiere), latest known occupation: Boeing UK Training and Flight Services, former RAF-pilot (Phantom), married to Theresa Valerie Martin, born 12 November 1958, airline purser; owner of Silver Fern (Sussex) Limited (founded on 14 Feb 2006, http://france.silverfernsussex.co.uk), arrived on a mountain bike (Vélo tout terrain (VTT)), said he met a car and a motorcycle going towards Chevaline, for his story about the crime scene see the BBC interview below.

Witness 2: Philippe Didierjean/Bossy (name uncertain, Didierjean according to The Times,  The Telegraph source for Bossy , born 5 April (?) 1971, described as an experienced local hiker (source Le Parisien), arrived in a car of unknown type with two female friends, according to himself to hike in Les Bauges, participates in The Alps Murders documentary (see below).

Witness 3: Laurent Fillion-Robin, born 1974, local builder, working at the time at the last house on Route de Chevaline in Chevaline, owned by British citizens Vivienne and John Beweek, saw the Al-Hilli family pass in their car and nobody following them, photo of Laurent Fillion-Robin,  Short interview 0:16-o:40 (shots from reconstruction at 1:14) 

Witness 4: Melvin (“the gentle giant”), surname unknown, born 1997, on a trial motorcycle, living in Marceau Dessous (?), father Franck, both heard shots lasting about 30 seconds

Witness 5: Denis Janin (sometimes spelled Jeanin in the press), shepherd, Col de Cherel, saw a motorcycle going in the direction towards Le Martinet at around 16:00 (source Le Parisien), wife Catherine Janin

Witness 6 (?): Sylvie Lecoeur, living in Chevaline, corner of Route de Chevaline and Chemin du Moulin, born 1963, met a white car (Peugeot 206/306?) speeding past her house at around 16:00, photo of Sylvie Lecoeur

Witness 7: Paul Ducher, Lise Ducher his wife, living on Chef Lieu, Route del la Combe d’Ire Chevaline, saw Al-Hilli’s car drive past; Philippe Didierjean and his two female friends, as well as an unknown cyclist on a mountain bike (VTT) who had been at the crime scene, stopped at their house on their way back from Le Martinet (source )

Victim 1: Sylvain Mollier, born 26 February 1967, welder at Ugitech Ugine, born and living in Ugine, Savoie; just on a three-year leave of absence from Ugitech, living with Claire Nathalie Hélène Schutz, pharmacist, born 7 Mai 1983, mother to their son Louis; Pharmacie Schutz-Morange , valued to 1 401 000 €, transferred to her from her parents 1 October 2011 (source). Le Journal des Societes 

Relatives of Mollier: 3 children: Leo (1996), Mathis (1999) and Louis (2012);

father Roger Mollier, born 1933, died 2011, worked at Ugitech;

mother Suzanne Mollier;

brothers Alain, Christophe, François;

sister Sylviane;

uncle Fernand Mollier;

ex-wife Lydie Ringot (Sclosa), hairdresser (Le Salon de Lydie), Ugine, born 1970, divorced Sylvain Mollier in 2006 (?), remarried to François R.;

Claire Schutz’s family:

father Thierry Schutz, pharmacist, born 15 Mai 1951 in Argentine Savoie France, living in Grignon (Albertville), (former) owner of Pharmacie Schutz Morange, 73 Rue Joseph Martin Grignon, and Pharmacie de la Léchère (?), in La Léchère;

mother Genevieve Schutz (Morange), born in 1954, orthopaedist working in the family’s pharmacy;

brother Laurent Schutz, biologist, Paris, born 11 August 1987;

uncle Pierre Morange, doctor and politician, living in Chambourcy near Paris, born 8 septembre 1956 in Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme) France.

Victim 2: Saad Al-Hilli, British citizen born 18 January 1962 in Baghdad Iraq, left Iraq in 1971 with the rest of the family, residence Oaken Lane Claygate Surrey, school Pimlico London and Kingston University, self-employed CAD-engineer, owned a house/ruin in rue Amiral Courbet, Saint Macaire France. There was an ongoing legal process between the two brothers Saad and Zaid Al-Hilli concerning the inheritance from their parents, concerning the house in Claygate as well as the money left by their father. Left England for France on Wednesday the 29th August, then stayed with his family in their caravan at Village Camping Europe (arrived on Saturday September 1st) and Le Solitaire du Lac Saint Jorioz campsite (arrived on Monday September 3rd), arrived at Le Martinet in his car with his family, Saad and Zainab left the car, the rest still in the backseat. They arrived at Le Martinet to take a walk on recommendation from the personnel at the campsite, nobody else was at Le Martinet when they arrived (source Le Dauphine  ). Zainab then saw a single “baddie”.

Relatives of Saad Al-Hilli: surviving children Zainab (2005) shot in the shoulder and hit in the face (presumably with the gun), Zeena (2008), placed by Surrey Social Services for 10 months in a foster family until a court decided they were allowed to live with their aunt Fadwa Al-Saffar source;

brother Zaid Al-Hilli, born 2 February 1959 in Iraq, living in Chessington Surrey, accountant in Burhill Golf Club , late wife Geraldine M O’Reilly (married 1992, died 2007), son Sean O’Reilly-Hilli, grandchildren, arrested on 23 June 2013 for being involved in the murder, released on bail first until 31 July 2013, then prolonged until October 2013;

father Kadhem Al-Hilli, born 7 December1919 in Najaf in what was then the British Mandate of Mesopotamia now Iraq, British citizen, died August 2011 in Spain (last address Avenida Mejico, Mijas, Spain), lawyer and businessman, owned a poultry farm and a Kleenex factory in Iraq until the family emigrated, current account opened 1984 in the Swiss branch of the British bank HSBC Holdings P.L.C. (The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited), account contained around 1 Million € (source E. Maillaud), the family had left a property in Adamiyah Baghdad (in the Green Zone?), which Saad Al-Hilli unsuccessfully (?) tried to retrieve and sell in December 2003;

mother Fashiha Al-Hilli (Shaban), born 1932 in Iraq, died 2003 in the UK.

Victim 3: Ikbal Al-Hilli, British citizen, born 1965 in Iraq (alt. Doha, Qatar?), dentist, wife of Saad Al-Hilli since 2003.

Victim 4: Suhaila Al-Saffar (Al-Allaf ), Swedish citizen, living in Tumba south of Stockholm, Sweden, born 1938 in Iraq, PhD in biology London, married to Abdul-Amir Al-Saffar (?) (died May 2011), mother of Ikbal Al-Hilli (see above), Fadwa al-Saffar, PhD in pharmacology Reading UK married to Ahmed Mahmood (?), and Haydar Thaher Al-Saffar, born 1966, hospitalised in Britain at the time of the killings.

The sums involved were about £300, with an attempt on another £2,000.

 

Some interesting details:


1. Roof rack on Al-Hilli’s car, Thule velo-vise bike carriers, photo , bought at Ebay, modified by Saad Al-Hilli to carry the family’s bicycles, according to Dutch woman they had a mountain bike on the rack when they arrived at the campsite (source , a mountain bike can also be seen in the caravan tent after the murder.

2. Another car, BMW X5, has been mentioned as seen by a ONF man.
