Life after death? Life before death?

All theories about life after death are no more than that - theories. We have no awareness of life before birth let alone conception, why should we have any awareness of life after death? The same applies to our state under anaesthesia or unconsciousness. There is no way humans can conceptualise the billions of human souls detached from their bodies existing in some spiritual dimension somewhere in the universe, or if there is, how any person can access it. It is preposterous to suggest that we do. Jesus, that remarkable individual from history, as C S Lewis suggested was either mad, bad or God. The possibility also exists that he was a uniquely good person on a mission to rescue the human race from all its defects and misery. That the world is fundamentally the same, both better and worse depending on circumstance, suggests his message is still as relevant as well as ineffective. He is reputed to have said, "In my father's house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." This was before he was mocked, humiliated, tortured and murdered which of course spoke oceans about human nature as well as the human (or divine?) capacity for endurance, fortitude and forgiveness. They say there are only two certainties in life: death and taxes. Jesus was familiar with both. Indeed it is said he mixed with tax gatherers and sinners that attracted the approbrium of the Pharisees and Levis. He accepted the worship of prostitutes. This was a man who treated accepted mores with contempt, whilst maintaining the highest moral standards himself. This was his amazing power to transform lives that still exists whenever and wherever people come into contact with his teaching. Maybe there is still an inexplicable spiritual force. People will believe what they want. As long as it does good or at least does no harm, I see no reason to disabuse them of it. I detest the sin of certainty and of dogmatism, either to force people to believe or to force them to desist from believing. Humans must make their own choices and be responsible for them. We must all try our best to be good and at least try not to injure or damage others; to strive to be just and deplore wherever we witness injustice. As to who holds the keys to an eternal afterlife of bliss I am content to leave it to the ineffable mercy of God and avoid prescriptions and qualifications; leading a humane and ethical life is hard enough. And in the twinkling of an eye, we shall all discover the nature of the after life if there is one, whatever our religious beliefs or none. There is no reason why we should not proselytise if we believe we are party to a spiritual truth if it may benefit others as it can do, but we also need the humility to accept we may be wrong. Life after death may be wishful thinking. By definition it can never be proved. People must come to their own opinions about it and the profound philosophical consequences that inevitably flow from it. Oh and of course this is just a personal opinion of mine with which everyone can concur or disagree, though I doubt, as still occurs in the world, anyone would think it deserves a sentence of death. Who knows?

Psalm 8 King James Version

Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Psalm 24 King James Version

The earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.
Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place?
He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive the blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.
