Sources identify suspect in El Paso shooting

The suspect in the deadly shooting at an El Paso shopping center is Patrick Crusius, 21, of Allen, Texas, three sources tell CNN.
The information comes from two federal law enforcement sources and one state government source. The federal sources tell CNN that investigators are reviewing an online writing posted days before the shooting that may speak to a motive.
The online posting was believed to be written by Crusius, the sources said, but that has not been confirmed.
In a news conference, Sgt. Robert Gomez of the El Paso Police Department told reporters the suspect in custody is a white male in his 20s.

"While Crusius’s father seems to help people heal from violent attacks, it appears as if Patrick does not align himself to the same values. A witness told Fox News that Crusius seemed “very nonchalant, like he was on a mission.” Vanessa Saenz said that Crusius was “just pointing at people and shooting straight at them. I saw about three or four just fall to the ground.”

Compare and contrast with this description of 17 year old male who allegedly threw an unrelated boy of 6 from the viewing gallery of the Tate Modern in London:

From:  https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9654644/tate-modern-boy-thrown-incident-news-latest/

"Administration worker Nancy Barnfield, 47, of Rochdale, was at the 10th-floor viewing gallery with a friend and their children when her friend heard a "loud bang" as the child landed on the fifth floor.

And she chillingly claimed she had seen the suspect walking through the Tate moments before, telling the Daily Mail: "He followed us around everywhere.
"I told my kids to stay away from that man, it went on for ages. He looked about 19 to 21 years old, acting so weird.
"He had his hands behind his back the whole time, his back to the wall, just watching people. We walked away from him then immediately when he was out of sight a woman was screaming 'My son, my son' and people were grabbing him."
She added that the victim's mother had an Italian accent, saying: "We did not notice the mum before, we noticed her after because she was hysterical by then."
The six-year-old boy today remains critical but stable - but is "no longer in a life-threatening situation" - while police continue to question the teen suspect.
But Ms Barnfield claimed the suspect remained "quite calm" as he was arrested.
She said: "He was white and unshaven and had a blue T-shirt with a top wrapped around his waist. He was unresponsive. Even with everything happening he was chillingly calm."

No one was shot at the mall, property owner says

No one was shot at Cielo Vista Mall or on its property, according to Simon Property Group Chief Marketing Officer Mikael Thygesen.
Thygesen says the shooting occurred on Walmart's property and in the Walmart parking lot.
The mall was put on lockdown because of the shooting, Thygesen said.
Police say they received reports of gunfire at a Walmart store and Cielo Vista Mall next door, but a spokesperson for Simon Property Group said that no one was shot at the mall or on its property.

2020 candidates respond to El Paso, Texas, shooting

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Montana Gov. Steve Bullock reacted early to the shooting situation in El Paso, Texas, as information emerged Saturday afternoon.
At a public union forum in Las Vegas, Booker told reporters that he didn’t have a lot of the details yet.
But he began to passionately advocate for people to join together for a “movement” now — and not to wait for Election Day — to act on passing gun reforms “before it happens to yet another community, before another person dies.”

CCTV footage said to be of El Paso gunman
The suspect has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius, a resident of Allen, in the Dallas area, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso. It is not yet clear how long before the attack he had gone to the city.

The shooting was reported at 10:39 a.m. Police arrived on the scene six minutes later, officials said. Law enforcement declined to identify the suspect, saying he was a 21-year-old man from Allen, Texas.
Wikipedia states "Patrick Wood Crusius was arrested shortly after the shooting started". The timed image above must therefore be the time it was posted not the time of the arrest.

From: https://edition.cnn.com/2019/08/05/us/el-paso-suspect-patrick-crusius/index.html
Crusius was arrested Saturday after he drove to an intersection just north of the store. Crusius got out of his car and surrendered to an El Paso motorcycle police officer, El Paso police Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said.
While surrendering, Crusius put his hands up and identified himself as the shooter, Carrillo said.
While in custody, Crusius has been "cold" in his interactions with police, police officials told CNN.
Police Chief Greg Allen told reporters Monday that Crusius has been cooperative, though he's shown no remorse and "appears to be in a state of shock and confusion."

  • Nine people were killed and 27 others injured early Sunday. The gunman was shot dead by police, the chief said.
  • The shooter was identified as 24-year-old Connor Betts, of Bellbrook, Ohio. He did not have a record with police.
  • Betts used an assault-style rifle, a .223 caliber weapon with high capacity magazines and wore body armor and a mask during the shooting, authorities said.
  • Multiple law enforcement officials told CBS News there is no hate crime nexus yet in the Dayton shooting, which occurred outside Ned Peppers bar in the city's historic Oregon District.
  • Law enforcement officials confirmed that the suspect's sister, Megan Betts, 22, was among the nine victims.

  1. Having now watched the programme, my reservations and suspicions are if anything increased. What a despicable programme and directed by BBC iii at predominantly a youth audience, which itself is disturbing. The thesis it projects is that men who believe they are unattractive to women, are likely and perhaps justified to be abusive - even violent - to women and others. It seeds yet another threat, another division, this time between men and women but deeply embedded in recent massacres whether genuine or not. "I'm worried there will be another incident based around 'incel'. Weird, spooky music throughout designed to raise tension.

"Dr Kaitlyn Regehr is a scholar of digital and modern culture, who writes and presents on gender and relationship cultures in the age of Web 2.0. She is committed to making academic ideas accessible through broadcasting and interactive new technology and has created documentary content for the BBC, iTunes, Toronto International Film Festival – and serves as a topic specialist for BBC3.

Her current projects include a commissioned documentary for BBC3 on online misogyny and digital “INCEL” (Involuntary Celibates) communities; presenting a new podcast series, ”How Researchers Change The World” for Taylor & Francis; and a commission from the Mayor of London with Professor Jessica Ringrose (UCL), which used digital storytelling and a survey of 2000 Londoners to map women’s experiences of public advertising. This project has led to a publication, in Signs (2019).

Regehr’s upcoming project examines contemporary sex and relationship education and considers the complex web of image exchange, pornography (often cited as young people’s main sexual educators), consent and safe digital practices for youth in the techno-facilitated era.

  2. Early Life and Work
Regehr was born in Toronto, Canada. Her mother, Cheryl Regehr is the Vice President and Provost of the University of Toronto.[11] Her father is British born psychiatrist, Graham Glancy who has worked on notable cases including the Paul Bernardo case, and has served as president of both the Canadian and American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law[12]

After receiving a bachelor's degree at the University of Victoria in 2007, Regehr went on to train with the Moscow Art Theatre and study Russian Physical Theatre at the Stanislavsky Summer School Harvard University.[13]Her interests in dance and movement drove her to pursue a joint master's degree from Britain's esteemed King's College London and the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.[14] Completed in 2010, her thesis, which was published in the journal Sexuality & Culture in 2012, explores the rise of recreational burlesque and questions the connection and distinctions between objectification and empowerment.[15]

Sandwiching her time as a master's student, Regehr starred as a presenter on the popular Slice Network (Canada) and Bio Network (UK) television series Re-Vamped[16] (Entertainment One), which examined women's physical embodiment and historic forms of beauty and body type.

Regehr returned to King's College London to work on a doctorate and graduated in 2016.[17] Her doctoral project was an ethnographic study of a group of former exotic dancers, who unionised in 1955, and now live and perform as an ageing community in Las Vegas. The project examined both the gendered and identity politics present in the dancers’ relationship to their ageing bodies. Among the outcomes of this study were a feature documentary film on burlesque queen “Tempest Storm”,[18] which she wrote and produced and was released on iTunes and ARTE (FR); a chapter in a forthcoming book (Oxford University Press); and a book with photographer Matilda Temperley (Oxford University Press).[19]

Deadly shooting in El Paso, Texas
    By Harmeet Kaur, CNN

    Updated 8:10 p.m. ET, August 3, 2019

Twenty people are dead and more than two dozen are injured following a shooting at a shopping complex in El Paso, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott said in a press conference on Saturday.

"We as a state unite in support of the victims and their family members," Abbott said. "We want to do all we can to assist them."

El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said that 26 people were wounded.

The shooting has a “nexus to a hate crime,” according to Allen. The FBI cautioned that more investigative work is needed to determine whether it was a hate crime.

Allen said the state of Texas will be the lead in prosecution of the suspect and that it is currently looking at potential capital murder charges.

The deceased will remain at the scene while the investigation continues, Allen said.
