'The Black Phone': Shades of 'Pizza-Gate'?
The film is having its world premiere at the main competition of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it will compete for the Golden Bear, on 18 February 2025. Sadly despite my birthday, they didn't invite me to it. I doubt I could have made it even if they had. It's an awful long bike ride.
As it happens last night I caught another film on 'Film 4', Ethan stars in, called The Black Phone. The other stars are
It premiered at 'Fantastic Fest' on September 25, 2021, and opened in US theatres after several delays on June 24, 2022. It was an unexpected financial success, finishing its theatrical run grossing $161.4 million globally on a production budget of less than twenty million dollars. Presumably it will continue earning.
Based on a short story of the same name by Joe Hill, the script was written by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill and directed by the former, was billed as a 'supernatural horror film'. Based around the idea of a man called 'The Grabber' abducting, incarcerating (in a cellar), torturing and eventually killing adolescents, I suppose it lived up to its name. It resisted the temptation to incorporate sexual abuse, but the idea was definitely left handing like a bad smell. Was it meant to appeal to disreputable appetites? The money it made certainly suggests it appealed to many.
But was there a deeper layer of intrigue to the enterprise? Was it my febrile imagination, or was there clear allusion to fairly recent scandalous allegations relating to goings on in Washington involving child abduction and torture for sexual gratification of the political and commercial elite, known as 'Pizzagate'?
It was a 'conspiracy theory' that went viral during the 2016 American Presidential Election claiming that the NYPD had discovered a child abuse a ring linked to members of the Democatic Party while searching through Anthony Weiner's, a Demotrate politician convicted of sex crimes, emails. He resigned the same year (2011) the Prince Andrew/Epstein relationship was revealed.
Strangely but perhaps unsurprisingly, despite reports detectives and FBI agents were 'sickened' by the evidence they uncovered and undertakings by those agencies that 'all would be revealed', the whole topic and suggestion that it could have occured was first ridiculed and then rather miraculously shriveled away like a poisoned weed. No more was heard of likely prosecutions or convictions. All elements of the story were said to have been 'de-bunked' and shown to be without foundation. Lies in other words to discredit the Democrat Candidate, Joe Biden.
Instead attention turned to the proclivities of Jeffrey Epstein and his friendship with Prince Andrew. Of course this had the practical benefit of directing attention away from all the other 'friends' of Epstein and their possibly nefarious activities. We all know the fate of both the central characters in this ominous soap opera and it wasn't pleasant for either of them - 'suicide' in the case of the former, permanent disgrace in the case of the latter - but were they, should they, have been those 'central characters', or were they just the 'fall guys' to protect a whole host of others?
The shot of the boy suspended appeared only briefly in the film. In fact if you blinked you would miss it but I manage to find the still. For anyone with the slightest knowledge of the Pizzagate affair could not miss the striking resemlance it has to the notorious hanging sculpture in the hallway of Tony Podesta the noted art collector.
