"Tap, tap, tap". Whatever could it be?
Distant explosions, water pipes
Or someone knocking persistently?
Eventually I stirred myself and went to look.
There outside the Oak Room,
Black in form - a Crow or Rook
Moved along the slate window cill,
Tapping at the window glass.
A jet black bird, with jet black eye,
Insistently pecked, alas unable to get in.
It strode and fumed at being blocked,
Then turned the corner and flew off.
A minute later the staccato noise resumed,
The percussionist had moved
And now was tapping at the western window there.
I climbed the stairs and went to look.
Our eyes met, mine blue, his black,
Black as the beady Jet, gaze held,
And for a moment it just stared and ceased its pecking.
Taking its time, it flapped its wing
And landed on extension ridge,
Strutted without a care, as if to say "I got you there"
And then flew off, away.
I wondered why so insistently he tapped me up,
What message did he bring at 12.40 p.m.,
This sunny March 20th, the first of Spring?
Had someone that I knew just passed away,
And this the doleful messenger of bad news?
Or was it just a joyful prank on human kind?
A personal invite out to play?
Unusual certainly it was and somewhat eerie too.
And not the first time spirits of the dead
Have apparently appeared in avian form to me,
Whether to console or warn, I cannot guess.
Mysterious how in feathered ways the spirit moves.
Almost a Valentine Sonnet

The morning has come and gone,But where it went I do not know,
Outside the cold and damp and eastern wind,
I think could presage snow.
Despite the cold, the coffee cup is hot
And warms my hand in holding it,
It's dark and sweet, sending a thrill right down my throat,
To where it warms the cockles of my heart.
I sip and slurp, there's no one here to hear.
My valentine day passed off, with not a boy or girl to care,
But many in the past, that caused a tear to fall,
Many a slip tween cup and lip, a lifetime isn't time at all,
The time it takes to empty it, leaving the vacant cup to cool,
I cough, I spit and think myself a fool
To value it or miss the passing years.

Re. your crystal comments, we take 'light' at face value, but what a mysterious thing it really is? On the one hand the Sun and on the other the eye. And in between? It was a great leap of Newton's inquiring brain and of science, when he realised that light wasn't just one thing but in fact a combination of colours, but a combination of colours that he could observe if he passed just a narrow beam through a crystal. Light could be refracted at slightly different angles to produce the 'rainbow' colours, of which we are all so familiar. In the process perhaps it lost some of its mystical and religious significance linked to an historical deluge. But even Newton remained unaware of the significance of his discovery, and that it represented only the tip of an unfolding science of wave frequency of which the visible spectrum forms only a tiny part. Stretching out on both ends are the 'ultra violet' and 'infra red' spectrums, that have enabled all the technological miracles of the modern age. As to light itself, it cannot be perceived or utilized without the little organ we call the 'eye' - the only part of the brain outside the skull! - which amazingly is common to almost all living creatures, including us. It too is a work of genius and not unlike a crystal itself. Then as to light, it too still remains something of a mystery: is it a particle or a wave, or some how both? We call them 'photons' without really knowing what they are other than somehow streaming from that Helium/Hydrogen inferno - a rather non-descript star, of which there are trillions and trillions - bouncing off everything around us giving form and colour to our world, necessitating the sun 93 million miles away and a little water filled lens in our head. PENAL POLICY

This is so unacceptable. I've always held that those who are a threat to society should remain locked up until they can no longer commit any physical violence against anyone – even a fly.
Tina's rights and those of any victim must always override those of the perpetrator.

It was a brutal attack, there's no doubt about. He was gaoled for six years but has served fourteen apparently. How does that work? As you say, after fourteen year IS he still a threat to society, or more particuarly Tina? A lot can change to a person in fourteen years. Presumably when on licence he would be subject to conditions, including geographical ones to keep him well away from her. Tina's fears and emotions are utterly understandable but if we had a prison system based on those, I doubt any prisoner would be freed and the nearly 100,000 currently locked up would be dwarfed by the new number. The British penal system may protect for a short while but is and always has been a failure to prevent recidivism and ensure reform. Everywhere, incarceration is a feature of the class and social milieu. British prisons are full of educational and social failures, where crime is chosen either because it gives better financial results or because it was the easy option. Violence is deeply embedded in humans and becomes more likely under the influence of drink and drugs. Most of criminal violence is in the context of families or relationships but one event may be untypical of a character or a life, and punishment must take account of this. Psychopathic men or women who remain a risk to others must remain isolated for their natural lives. For the rest, freedom must rely on an objective assessment of the person, the risk if any that they pose, and adequate conditions to protect any potential victims. Limitless retribution, literally 'an eye for an eye', is natural reaction but not a realistic or humane penal policy.
