Took the car to Perranuthnoe and then walked the coastal path towards Cudden Point and back again. It was a most glorious day and the sea shone like silver beneath me, as I lay in the grass on the cliff top. The water was calm with eddies of light as the east wind caught the waves, vast ripples running across the surface. Then it turned restless, rising and falling against the black inhospitable rocks. Rushing up the creeks, swirling back out again. That whole immense body of water unstoppably being moved towards the land by the movement of the moon, a quarter of a million miles away. Unseen but irresistable force of nature causing the tide to turn. Then tonight when I awoke from a deep sleep, shining through my western window, the unusual sight of two bright lights, imperceptibly sliding down the night sky to hide behind the hill. Jupiter and Venus, those ancient Gods of thunder and love, unobscured by cloud, resplendent like burnished steel; somehow reassuring and heart-warming, like long lost lovers, calling unexpectedly out of the blue or even out of the darkness - of sleep and night. Who knows, like that famous star centuries gone, it may augur a new age? We could certainly do with one.
