The 'unexplained' death of Connor Reed.

The first British person (26) to suffer from Corona virus dies, a year later, 'accidentally'.

In this report he is called 'Mr Reid', 26, from Llandudnodeclared dead at 10pm on October 24. (Not Sunday 25 October as initially reported by police) https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/coroner-confirms-how-connor-ellis-21115192

UPDATE (8.8.2021):

SOME VERY STRANGE INEXPLICABLE INCONSISTENCIES REVEALED BY LINKED-IN PAGE!

The Linked-In page for the Connor Reed in question, proved by the photograph attached (see postscript below) provides at least two inconsistences that appear to contradict those published concerning his time in China and death in Britain. First it states that he was in China from September, 2015. This would mean that at the time of his 'death' on October the 24/25th 2020, more than FIVE years would have elapsed since he went there, not three as stated - a difference of at least two years!  Secondly the page states that from "July 2017 to the present (4 yrs 2mos(sic))" - i.e. almost a year after his stated death - he is still alive and working as a "Market Asset Specialist for the Reed Corporation" in Bejing, China! Not only does this conflict with the stated information that he had been a teacher in of English in a school for the previous six or seven months when he went off sick on the 25th October, 2019, it would also mean that the Connor Reed who became a Corona Virus celebrity, could not have died in Wales in 2020. If someone did die, it could NOT be the Connor Reed to whom the Link-In page relates, and whose image below appeared in all the media outlets.  This if accurate, confirms my suspicions that something very 'fishy' is going on with this story.

In a Facebook post, on October 27, his mother Hayley said: "It bring (sic) me great sad (sic) announce our beautiful son Connor Reed has passed away in a tragic accident at Bangor University at the weekend. He will be so greatly missed by his brothers, family and friends. He had such a wonderful smile, enthusiasm and love for life."

Fifteen hundred deaths a day but some are more intriguing than others.

Over ten thousand people in the UK die from a multiplicity of causes each and every week. The country has been obsessed with just one cause for well over a year, despite it officially coming in twenty-fourth. This is clearly totally irrational but for some unstated reason the government is intent on maintaining its crazy ineffective policy.

As a general principle, the older the person, the more likely it is, as a natural consequence, they will experience health complications and an end to life. Conversely, the younger the person, the more likely that premature death will be viewed as tragic and preventable and that the cause will increasingly be accidental, violent or self-inflicted. In other words, when young people die it more frequently raises questions as to the causes and their legality. In short, a young person dying more likely raises questions of possible negligent or criminal causation?  That is certainly true of the untimely death of Connor Reed - or 'Reid' as some news outlets have reported it - a fit young man with no known physical or mental  health problems at the young age of twenty-six.

HAYLEY REED
This is a screen shot of an interview on the 10th March, 2020 by channel four news whilst he was still in wuhan, china. it is very hard to explain the facial change apparent in the photo taken as compared to the one above taken in australia soon after. beard and shaved head can be easily explained but the wider mouth, longer, wider nose, higher eye-brows and different eye colour (brown to blue) are more problematic. he had also stated he did not drink alcohol but is shown apparently enjoying a celebratory pint of beer.  Full interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9oqvJ3iXGI were there two connors as indicated by the two different spellings of reed/reid and two different dates of his demise???  you decide!

Coronavirus - Connor has lived in China for three years. 2 Feb, 2020.

The unexplained death of Connor Reed (26)

I have to admit I have only just become aware of his death, nine months after the event, by a short mention in last Friday's Times report of the Coroner's Inquest finding that it was "accidental" but linked to drug intake. The incident struck me as strange given Mr Reed's high profile as the first Briton to be recorded suffering from Coronavirus whilst living and working in Wuhan, China.

In fact on my blog I referenced an article from the Bristol Evening Post of the 5th March, 2020, drawing attention to several peculiar elements to his account which heightened my curiosity regarding the circumstances of his death. See:  https://veaterecosan.blogspot.com/2020/03/corona-my-corona-needless-to-say-corona.html

Unfortunately, as is often the case, only one version of the inquest proceedings, replicated in all outlets, seems to be available, and this lacking anything other than the bare facts. Even some of these - such as the date of his demise - appear to conflict.

Connor Ellis Reed (26) who came from  Llandudno, died on Sunday, October 25, 2020. Shortly after 10pm his housemates found him collapsed on his bedroom floor at his Gwynedd University digs in Bangor, North Wales. He was studying Chinese and linguistics.

First UK person to suffer from Coronavirus?

Mr Reed first became publicly well-known in February 2021 as the first British person to suffer the effects of Corona virus in November 2019. Prior to this he had apparently run a daily video session to friends on an unspecified internet platform. If so it is strange if his mother was not included, contrary to his statement she was unaware of his condition as he had not informed her "as he did not want to worry her." On it he was careful not to make remarks critical of the Chinese state, he said.

I am unable to to pin down when, if at all, these video sessions found their way into the media but they seem not to have been up-loaded to YouTube or if they were, have since been removed. A YouTube search shows no evidence of them.

He had previously worked for three years at a school in Wuhan China and had returned to the UK in about March, 2021 (the exact date has not been stated). This estimate is based on his mother's statement he was subject to a total of 21 weeks in quarantine from the onset of symptoms in late November, 2019.

There is a certain lack of clarity and contradiction relating to the Corona virus symptoms, times and dates. For example his mother was quoted as saying he was under Chinese quarantine for twenty weeks, later modified to 16 weeks there, 2 weeks in Australia and 3 in Britain when he had returned. She also stated he was fluent in Mandarin and by his own admission was learning Russian whilst in Chinese quarantine.

He was quoted as saying he wondered if he was going to die from his difficulty to breathe but later was quoted as saying the effects were not particularly serious. Although attending hospital and undergoing multiple tests that diagnosed a pneumonia, he was not kept in and declined to take the standard anti-biotics prescribed. It may be significant that the post mortem - the details of which are scanty - carried out after his death, revealed inflammatory congestion in the lungs.

Wide media coverage from February, 2020.

Whilst still in China and subsequently back in England he was the subject of multiple television interviews and newspaper reports and became somewhat of a minor news celebrity. This was used immediately before the first lock-down in April 2020, to ram home the message that Wuhan was the source of the outbreak and the nature of the symptoms and measures that could be expected. He opined that although 'lock-down' measures were in place in Wuhan, he thought it unlikely it would ever be acceptable in Britain because of the different culture that existed there. (How wrong could he be?)

It would appear that the widespread news coverage of his case dates from early February, 2020, conveniently only a few weeks prior to the British lockdown. It was undoubtedly an important strand in the apocalyptic propaganda being put out by government at the time. An example of how it engendered debate (and fear) can be gained from this Reuters post on the 11th March, 2020.  https://www.facebook.com/Reuters/posts/connor-reed-was-working-in-wuhan-when-he-contracted-the-coronavirus-in-late-2019/3071956816157987/

The actual mechanics of how his plight in China became known to western media, propelling him to such notoriety is not altogether clear, though he says he was first contacted by the local Llandudno newspaper. Were officials in the British Embassy involved in any way? He states they were not particularly interested so it appears not.  So it seems this was a media circus, rather than part of a government well orchestrated public relations exercise.

Questions raised by the initial account.

I raised certain doubts regarding the story at the time here: https://veaterecosan.blogspot.com/search?q=connor+reed
One interesting fact was that he claimed his SARS Cov-2 symptoms started on the 25th November, 2019, five days prior to the official Chinese account of the outbreak at the beginning of December, and a full month before it was made public.

A pneumonia outbreak of unknown cause, confirming 27 cases, was not made by Chinese authorities to the WHO office in China until 31 December of that year. Connor's illness, now called 'Covid 19', (actually 'SARS Cov-2') ended coincidentally on the the 19th day.

Hospital diagnosis of 'pneumonia'.

On the ninth day of his illness, he took a taxi to Zhongnan University Hospital in Wuhan and underwent multiple tests that diagnosed pneumonia, but it seems he wasn't kept in, although he felt as if he was dying. Strangely in his account he states that the diagnosis of pneumonia was made prior to the tests when he was first seen by a doctor.

He declined to take the anti-biotics prescribed, relying instead on hot whisky/honey 'toddies' and Tiger Balm. Clearly these worked, as he was well again by the 14th December! He also claimed that a kitten in his flat had fallen ill and died from the disease, although this appears to be no more than speculation and struck me as questionable at the time.  Nevertheless it appears he was required to remain in isolation in China for 16 weeks before being allowed to travel, first to Australia and then two weeks later to Britain. This could not have been completed until at least early April, although his account was published early February and became a media sensation by mid-March. On the basis of timings, this must have happened whilst still in Wuhan and for the two weeks in Brisbane?

North Wales 'Pioneer' Report, Feb. 4th 2020

Speaking to the Pioneer on 4th February or immediately before, the former Ysgol Bro Gwydir pupil said:

"What has been said in the national media about me is correct. "I went to hospital about December 5/6. I was sick before with flu. I had pneumonia type thing, that is why I went to the hospital.

"I intend to stay in Wuhan for the foreseeable future. It is not as serious [the situation] as people are saying. It is not a cause for panic. It is not as serious as how it has been reported.

"I would like to give some acknowledgement to the Chinese authorities for their openness in terms of information. We are well informed, as opposed to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) [in2003]

https://www.northwaleschronicle.co.uk/news/18840297.llandudnos-connor-reed-first-brit-catch-coronavirus-dies-aged-26/   https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/18210518.connor-reed-caught-coronavirus-thought-bad-case-flu/

So on the 4th February he was still in Wuhan and apparently intent on remaining there, yet in weeks he was back in the UK.  What changed his plans so drastically and why did he not stay longer with his parents in Brisbane when he had the chance? These questions were never put or answered it seems.

And another question relates to the disparity over how serious his symptoms or the 'situation' was in Wuhan. He clearly down-played them in this conversation. A question arises was his case later intentionally magnified or exaggerated, to support the Government's fear narrative. Or was he somehow used or manipulated by agencies for that purpose? Did he receive any payments or financial benefits from his contributions to media outlets?

Then there is the subsidiary question of how he was able to reference to the situation in 2003, suggesting it was not as bad, when he would have been only nine at the time and still presumably living in Wales? Was the script his own or was it written for him?

© Provided by Daily Mail Writing for the Daily Mail in November, Connor described his symptoms, initially putting the illness down to a bad flu.  From: https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/first-briton-to-catch-covid-dies/ar-BB1aAMTp

Note this photo appears to establish the fact that from as early as November, 2019,
i.e. at the very beginning of his illness, he was in regular contact correspondence with the Daily Mail.  "Writing for" might suggest he was paid for his contributions. It has not been made clear how or when the link with this newspaper was made.

The above image, presumably taken in his Wuhan residence or hotel, and the original text beneath it, raises a significant question. How if the onset of his Coronavirus symptoms did not start until the 27th November, 2019 was he able to describe them to the Daily Mail in "November" of that year? Further his image raises no obvious signs of ill health. Indeed the quite opposite. It is hard to reconcile this image with his quote: "I feel dreadful. This is no longer just a cold. I ache all over, my head is thumping, my eyes are burning, my throat is constricted. The cold has travelled down to my chest and I have a hacking cough," which he wrote at the time. How can these apparent inconsistency with the Pioneer quote above be explained?

Daily Mail account 4th March, 2020

In a Daily Mail article from 4th March, 2020 an alleged 'diary'  account is published covering 25 entries up to the 72nd day.  This paints a more serious picture of the symptoms suffered. Was it written at the time or from memory later. Was Connor the only author or did he have assistance from any quarter?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8075633/First-British-victim-25-describes-coronavirus.html

The account, of which extracts below, forms part of a bigger spread, even including fluffy images of the cat, is obviously designed to feed  the UK with panic of a deadly plague and condition the population to accept all the restrictions that were imminent. Is it to be taken at face or treated with a certain degree of suspicion?

Day 1 — Monday November 25: I have a cold. I’m sneezing and my eyes are a bit bleary. It isn’t bad enough to keep me off work. I arrived in this country to teach English as a foreign language — but now I’m a manager at a school in Wuhan, the city in central China where I have lived for the past seven months.

I speak Mandarin well, and the job is interesting. My cold shouldn’t be very contagious, so I have no qualms about going to work. And I live alone, so I’m not likely to give it to anyone. There hasn’t been anything in the news here about viruses. I have no cause for concern. It’s just a sniffle.

Day 7: I spoke too soon. I feel dreadful. This is no longer just a cold. I ache all over, my head is thumping, my eyes are burning, my throat is constricted. The cold has travelled down to my chest and I have a hacking cough.

This is flu, and it’s going to take more than a mug of hot honey, with or without the magic whisky ingredient, to make me feel better.

The symptoms hit me this afternoon like a train and, unless there’s an overnight miracle, I will not be going to work tomorrow. It’s not just that I feel so ill — I really don’t want to give this flu to any of my colleagues.

Day 8: I won’t be in work today. I’ve warned them I’ll probably be off all week. Even my bones are aching. It’s hard to imagine I’m going to get over this soon.

Even getting out of bed hurts. I am propped up on pillows, watching TV and trying not to cough too much because it is painful.

Day 9: Even the kitten hanging around my apartment seems to be feeling under the weather. It isn’t its usual lively self, and when I put down food it doesn’t want to eat. I don’t blame it – I’ve lost my appetite too.

Day 10: I’m still running a temperature. I’ve finished the quarter-bottle of whisky, and I don’t feel well enough to go out and get any more. It doesn’t matter: I don’t think hot toddies were making much difference.

Day 11: Suddenly, I’m feeling better, physically at least. The flu has lifted. But the poor kitten has died. I don’t know whether it had what I’ve got, or whether cats can even get human flu. I feel miserable.

Day 12: I’ve had a relapse. Just as I thought the flu was getting better, it has come back with a vengeance. My breathing is laboured. Just getting up and going to the bathroom leaves me panting and exhausted. I’m sweating, burning up, dizzy and shivering. The television is on but I can’t make sense of it. This is a nightmare.

By the afternoon, I feel like I am suffocating. I have never been this ill in my life. I can’t take more than sips of air and, when I breathe out, my lungs sound like a paper bag being crumpled up. This isn’t right. I need to see a doctor. But if I call the emergency services, I’ll have to pay for the ambulance call-out myself. That’s going to cost a fortune. I’m ill, but I don’t think I’m dying — am I?

Day 13: I arrived back at my apartment late yesterday evening. The doctor prescribed antibiotics for the pneumonia but I’m reluctant to take them — I’m worried that my body will become resistant to the drugs and, if I ever get really ill and need them, they won’t work. I prefer to beat this with traditional remedies if I can.

It helps, simply knowing that this is pneumonia. I’m only 25 and generally healthy: I tell myself there’s no reason for alarm. I have some Tiger Balm. It’s like Vick’s vapour rub on steroids. I pour some into a bowl of hot water and sit with a towel over my head, inhaling the fumes. I’m going ‘old school’. And I’ve still got the antibiotics in reserve if I need them.

Day 17: I am feeling slightly better, but I don’t want to get my hopes up yet. I’ve been here before.

Day 18: My lungs no longer sound like bundles of broken twigs.

Day 19: I am well enough to stagger out of doors to get more Tiger Balm. My nose has cleared enough to smell what my neighbours are cooking, and I think I might have an appetite for the first time in nearly two weeks.

Day 22: I was hoping to be back at work today but no such luck. The pneumonia has gone — but now I ache as if I’ve been run over by a steamroller. My sinuses are agony, and my eardrums feel ready to pop. I know I shouldn’t but I’m massaging my inner ear with cotton buds, trying to take the pain away.

Day 24: Hallelujah! I think I’m better. Who knew flu could be as horrible as that, though?

Day 36: A tip-off from a friend sends me hurrying to the shops. Apparently, the Chinese officials are concerned about a new virus that is taking hold in the city. There are rumours about a curfew or travel restrictions. I know what this will mean — panic buying in the shops. I need to stock up on essentials before everyone else does.

Day 37: The rumours were right. Everyone is being told to stay indoors. From what I’ve heard, the virus is like a nasty dose of flu that can cause pneumonia. Well, that sounds familiar.

Day 52: A notification from the hospital informs me that I was infected with the Wuhan coronavirus. I suppose I should be pleased that I can’t catch it again — I’m immune now.

However, I must still wear my face mask like everyone else if I leave the apartment, or risk arrest. The Chinese authorities are being very thorough about trying to contain the virus.

Day 67: The whole world has now heard about coronavirus. I’ve told a few friends about it, via Facebook, and somehow the news got out to the media.

Day 72 — Tuesday, February 4: It seems the newspapers think it’s terrific that I tried to cure myself with hot toddies.

I attempt to explain that I had no idea at the time what was wrong with me — but that isn’t what they want to hear.

The headline in the New York Post says, ‘UK teacher claims he beat coronavirus with hot whisky and honey.’

I wish it had been that easy.

In this account his symptoms appear to last up to the 24th day. On the 67th (31st January, 2020? apparently still in China) he writes (or someone does)

"My local paper back in Llandudno, North Wales, has been in touch with me. Maybe I caught the coronavirus at the fish market. It’s a great place to get food on a budget, a part of the real Wuhan that ordinary Chinese people use every day, and I regularly do my shopping there."

The immediate question that comes to mind is how can  these different accounts of how his situation was publicised by newspapers and mainstream television channels in the UK and abroad, be reconciled?  He is apparently "writing for the Daily Mail from (at least) November" with a daily detailed account, yet he claims it is not until the 67th day of his symptoms ( 31st January, 2020) that his local paper and media generally pick up and run with his story; this on the back of "telling a few friends via Facebook and somehow the news has got out."

This appears either somewhat naïve or disingenuous doesn't it, if he had been writing for the Daily Mail for over two months?

In China. For how long and why?

Information on why Mr Reed was in China is opaque to say the least. Some reports state he had been there for three years, in other words from 2016 when he would have been 22. Others modify this to say prior to China he was in Indonesia and the Far East for a time. An exact time-line cannot be found.

He had been in his current position teaching English for the previous 7 months (i.e. from May 2019) Where he was, or what he was doing, prior to that has not been stated, nor why he went to China or how he obtained the necessary visas to stay there.

Did he qualify as a teacher or anything else, before he went or was the whole process just rather accidental? His mother said he was fluent in Mandarin, suggesting he had a bent for languages but it is not clear whether this was obtained before or after his arrival. It is not clear how and by whom he was financially supported over those three years.

This earlier Daily Mail article dated 3rd February, 2020 states
"Mr Reed, who has been in China for the last three years and in Wuhan for the last six months, was discharged from the Zhongnan University Hospital in the city. Mr Reed added that the Foreign Office were 'disinterested' when he told them about his infection."  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7959643/First-Briton-contract-coronavirus-claims-shook-infection-hot-toddy-whisky.html

Of course all of this may be accurate and true but I cannot rid my mind of the possibility that Connor Reed was manipulated and used for propaganda purposes by elements of the media and/or government. Was he an innocent teacher in Wuhan or did he have connections to the British Embassy there? The above quote suggests not, although it may have said with the specific purpose of distancing him from official channels.

More background information from Daily Mail

More background information can be gleaned from the following Daily Mail article published on 6th November, 2020 immediately following his death. It answers some of the questions I raised above but poses others. Note how the earlier "two weeks in Australia" becomes "all summer". Also in this account, he does not return to the UK until September, 2020 only a little over a month before his death. How is this to be explained? Note also the family moved from Hertfordshire to Australia not ten years before as previously stated, but fourteen years before Connor's death, namely 2006. There is obviously two or three years unaccounted for whilst back in the UK from about 2014 - 2017 when he was 20 - 23. Was he in education or employment during that period?

"After leaving school, he briefly worked as a salesman in a Brisbane electrical store, but in his early 20s he returned to the UK to live with relatives in England.

Then, one day, he phoned his father and announced, without any prior warning, that he was moving to China to learn Mandarin. 'Are you nuts?' Mr Reed asked. But his son was serious.

Connor spent three years in the Far East, passing through Malaysia and other Chinese cities before settling in Wuhan, where he was excited by the colourful street ambience and the warmth of the local people.

In all, he added, Connor, spent 20 weeks alone in lockdown. This included quarantine in Australia, where he spent the summer with his family, and a further 14 days' quarantine after his arrival in Britain in September.

Deciding he needed academic qualifications to back up his fluent Mandarin, Connor applied without success to study at several Chinese universities. This may have had something to do with the deteriorating relations between China and Australia over trade, his father surmises.

When he was offered a place at Bangor, therefore, he 'leapt at the opportunity'.

So, in September he was on his travels again, flying for almost 24 hours to Manchester, and then on by road to North Wales.

His father wonders now whether the long flight — possibly exacerbated by some lingering coronavirus complication — may have damaged his son's health.

'I don't think it was Covid-related, but you never know,' he says.

The theory seems worthy of consideration. A study by researchers from Imperial College London, published in August, found that coronavirus commonly causes blood-clots in the lungs.

By early March, three weeks before Boris Johnson announced our first lockdown, Connor was warning millions of Britons — via this newspaper and TV interviews — of the misery that lay ahead for anyone who became infected.

Wary of criticising his host country, though, Connor always described China's handling of the pandemic in positive terms.

And Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London, told the Mail that victims of 'long Covid' — the effects of which are now emerging — could conceivably die from thrombosis, or blood clots, months after an apparent recovery.

This week, however, North West Wales Coroner Dewi Pritchard Jones, who is investigating Connor's death, told the Mail that he is exploring 'other avenues' and believes he is close to confirming the cause of death.

'Blood clots in major organs are routinely checked for at post-mortem,' he said.

'With Covid, it is invariably in the lungs that clots stick.

'I am looking at other avenues, but I don't want to tell you my theory in case it proves unfounded. We think we know what happened, but I have to prove it.

'I am waiting for results to come back from the lab, and I am hoping that will explain everything.'

He declined to disclose the nature of these tests, but it is believed he is awaiting a toxicology report.

If so, this seems to suggest some form of overdose, albeit perhaps accidental." END EXCERPT.

"Learning Russian."

Not content with being fluent in Mandarin, he was also learning Russian. If he was not working, how was he financially supporting himself for at least four months? How and when was his trip back to Britain facilitated?  When did he begin the linguistic course at Bangor - presumably Autumn term 2020 - so what was he doing between March and September of that year. Was he enrolled on the four year BA course in Chinese and Linguistics and how did he afford it? Why was he studying Mandarin if already fluent in it rather than Russian?

Unanswered Questions.

All these and many more intriguing questions remain unanswered in the public domain. Indeed it is virtually impossible to discover any biographical or professional details beyond the scant information contained in the two stories that have circulated so widely. It seems journalists have either not been interested, or not enquired, or information has not been forthcoming, from family or authorities. In view of the circumstances surrounding his high profile role in the Corona virus episode and his later unexplained death, should this lack be regarded as worrying?

Wuhan, China.
About 1,300 miles between Harbin and Wuhan.

He apparently grew up in Llandudno and must have been about 12 when his parents relocated to Brisbane via Hertfordshire.  It appears he accompanied them, finished his schooling and worked there until he was twenty?  It seems unlikely he gained any relevant academic or professional qualifications before ending up in a Wuhan school teaching English. He became fluent in Mandarin apparently in China but it is unclear if he took language classes there or gained any qualifications? Why the interest in Russian and going back to academic studies in England?

Apparently Bangor was second choice to Chinese universities but no information has been provided on how he was getting on there. Why, despite the family's concerns over his death, is there no reference to the family being legally represented at either of the Coroner's Inquest hearings? Failure of his parents or siblings to visit either immediately after his death or at either of the Inquest sittings is put down to Covid travel restrictions. Nor is there any mention of Welsh relatives, with whom he earlier stayed, attending the hearings.

After his illness and isolation in Wuhan he seemingly made a full recovery and went on to visit his parents, Rod and Hayley Reed and his siblings, Morgan and Oliver, in Australia before moving back to North Wales. Haley his mother is quoted as saying after his death: “He’s been in more isolation than anyone we know – 16 weeks in Wuhan, two weeks in Australia and three more weeks in England." Biographical information appears to be completely lacking. He has parents and two siblings in Australia but information on them is similarly lacking. They have not managed to visit Britain in connection either with his death, funeral or inquest hearings.

In this 'North Wales Live' article dated 5th February, 2020 Reed is quoted as saying - despite Foreign Office advice
that all Britons in China should leave the country on a Sunday charter flight - he's not going anywhere. Connor Reed, who works at a college in Wuhan, said: "I will be staying. I am with this city during this crisis now. I don't see a point in running away when there is a crisis. Also, if I potentially could infect others, I'd like to protect people at home." https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/north-wales-coronavirus-victim-explains-17694559

It appears he returned to the UK as late as September 2020, only a little over a month before his death. His father is quoted as wondering whether the long flight from Brisbane to the UK in September— possibly exacerbated by some lingering coronavirus complication — may have damaged his son's health. "I don't think it was Covid-related, but you never know," he says.  https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/connor-reed-covid-coronavirus-wuhan-19239316

'Unexplained death.'

The halls of residence at Bangor University, north Wales, where Connor was found dead. (Daily Mail)

His death was at first reported as 'unexplained', but an Inquest has now held it resulted from a 'toxic cocktail' of alcohol and drugs. The
inquest in Caernarfon on Thursday 22nd July, 2021, heard the first-year student had taken fentanyl, ecstasy, and cannabis. (That ubiquitous '22' again!) The justification for this conclusion is not provided in reports. It was held he suffered 'respiratory failure due to combined drug toxicity'.

Although appearing in multiple outlets, only one account of the second Inquest by an anonymous reporter, replicated in all of them, appears. It gives only the bare bones of proceedings and focuses only on the Coroner's finding that he died from congestion of the lung consequent on a "cocktail of drugs" including Fentanyl, Ecstasy, Cannabis and alcohol being ingested. Yet strangely it seems there was no evidence in the room of any of these and the toxicological results were apparently inconclusive. It appears that the Coroner's judgment was based largely on hearsay evidence from a friend and  autopsy revealed conjecture.

His father is quoted as saying: "I have never known him to take drugs, and surely that's the first thing they would look for, but they haven't told us they've found any. At first, the police thought he had fallen off a chair in his bedroom (hitting his head on the floor), but the university says not. A post-mortem examination has been done because we've got a report from the coroner saying it was inconclusive." https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/connor-reed-covid-coronavirus-wuhan-19239316

Critically, virtually no information is provided in the public domain regarding the circumstances surrounding his discovery at about 10 p.m. on either the 24th  or 25th October (!) and that he was found on the floor of his room between bed and desk. Nothing about who found him and what they did. Nothing about the exact position of the body, what he was wearing or post mortem signs. Who rang the emergency services and precisely at what time? (Presumably the call was recorded but the recording or text of it has not been released) Which service arrived first, police or ambulance and at what times? Specifically the personnel involved and the action that they took? At what stage did the police decide the circumstances were not suspicious and what informed it? Whether at any stage prior to this the room was regarded as a 'crime scene'?

Did a doctor attend to make assessments as to the time of death and causes? Were photographs taken, if so by whom? Was the room and body searched forensically? Were any samples taken from body or room? Were finger prints taken? Were any attempts made to avoid secondary contamination? Why was the apparent absence of alcohol or drug paraphernalia, given the age of the casualty, not viewed as suspicious? Was a mobile phone and/or lap top computer located and interrogated and what was on them that might provide information to substantiate claims made about the dark web and drug purchases besides other things?

At what time was the body removed, who carried out the autopsy and what were the specific findings - though stated to be 'inconclusive'. Specifically were any bruises or other suspicious marks on the skin noted, such as might have been caused by injection? What specifically were the results of the toxicology results - chemical residues in what organs? Subsequently who was interviewed and what technology was interrogated to determine movements, contacts and communications that might throw light on final hours? Which police officer took charge of the investigation and did he or she, submit either verbal or written evidence to the Inquest?

In short, was a thorough and professional police investigation carried out or not? Certainly if there was, little or no public evidence of it appeared in newspaper reports, either immediately following the death in October 2020, or after either of the Inquest hearings in February and July 2021.

Important confusion over stated date of his death.

First I must draw attention to an important conflict and contradiction. This 'Wales on line' report states: "He was last seen alive in the early hours of the following day and declared dead at 10pm on October 24."
This is repeated by the Daily Mirror and other outlets.

Yet in initial reports such as this one by Sky on the 7th November, 2020 it is reported as follows:  "In a statement released earlier this week, the force said it was called to a student's room at a Bangor University halls of residence shortly after 10pm on (Sunday) 25 October, (2020)" https://news.sky.com/story/connor-reed-family-of-first-briton-known-to-have-caught-covid-may-never-know-truth-about-his-death-12126254

How could such an important fact relating to the discovery of a dead young student be so fundamentally at odds? Is it an error or an intentional change to the story line? It is hardly insignificant.

Stated cause of death.

The finding that the cause was alcohol and a mixture of drugs seems to be based on the flimsiest of evidence, unless of course the unpublicised toxicology report supports it. If it does, why was this crucial piece of evidence not revealed to the press, particularly as it seems no evidence of either drink or drugs were found in his room or on his person? There were no obvious signs when Connor was found either: no note, no empty medicine bottles or instruments; no outward physical injuries.

Connor Ellis Reed, 26, was found dead in his bedroom at his halls of residence in Bangor on October 24, 2020 by a fellow student.

An inquest opening in to his death held in Caernarfon heard how his friends became concerned having not seen Mr Reed for a period of time.

After some time friends of his entered his bedroom and found Mr Reed lying on the floor between his bed and his desk.

Acting senior coroner for North-West Wales Katie Sutherland said during the inquest opening that following a post-mortem the provisional cause of death was given as respiratory failure due to bronchopneumonia caused by combined drug toxicity.

The inquest has now been adjourned until the full investigation in to Mr Reed's death has been concluded.  Funeral at  Colwyn Bay  Crematorium.

Neither parents or friends were aware of any indications of suicidal tendencies. "I can see why people might think it was suicide, but I can't see it," his father told the Daily Mail at the time. It is not clear from reports what the results of toxicological tests revealed but in the absence of clear findings, we must assume they were inconclusive and the Coroner's findings are based on other verbal reports. Apparently there was no evidence of suicide or the Coroner would have undoubtedly referred to it.

It was reported that at first, police believed he had hit his head falling from a chair (he was discovered on the floor between his bed and desk) but subsequently a flat mate and friend of Mr Reed, Harry Rogers reported that Connor was in the habit of obtaining illegal drugs from the 'dark web', which were delivered to the university post room. On Friday October 23rd, he and a flatmate had shared a bottle of whiskey before they took drugs together. It should be noted if the original Police report can be relied upon,  this was two days before he died so a very tenuous cause of death, unless more was taken subsequently.

An inquest into his death held in Caernarfon, found that the first-year student had taken "a cocktail of drugs" and suffered "respiratory failure due to broncho-pneumonia due to combined drug toxicity." The coroner Coroner Kate Sutherland ruled that he had taken “a cocktail of illegal drugs" and recorded a conclusion of a drug-related death.

How she came to this conclusion is not reported. Is it based on unreported toxicological findings or merely a circumstantial assumption in the absence of any other viable cause? She said: “I appreciate for members of Connor’s family there may well be a number of unanswered questions. But I’m afraid any inquest can’t answer all questions."  Specifically, what are those unanswered questions? Shouldn't they be identified? Is it possible that foul play, ruled out by the police, could be one of them?

Was the family legally represented at the Inquest?

Connor's parents, who have lived in Australia for about ten years, were unable to attend their son's funeral on Saturday 7th November, 2020 at the Colwyn Bay Crematorium because of Covid restrictions then in force. Nor did they attend either of the Coroner's inquests. There is no indication that they were legally represented at the hearing. If so why not? Who, if anyone did attend the inquest and funeral is not revealed. Clearly all autopsy and other arrangements were completed in less than two weeks as the date of the cremation proves.

Coincidences.

There are two rather strange coincidences in relation to the untimely death of Connor Reed, beyond that is his earlier notoriety as allegedly the first Briton to contract Coronavirus. The first relates to another well-known death in suspicious circumstances; the second in relation to what appears on a Google search.

The case of Gareth Williams

When by chance I came across the news of Connor's death at 26 I immediately thought of Gareth Williams, the GCHQ and MI6 employee who was discovered in a hold-all in his flat bath tub. This was later blamed on Russian agents, who it was claimed tried to blackmail him over alleged cross dressing.

It was claimed he had discovered a Russian agent in GCHQ and he was killed to prevent him revealing what he knew.

The incoherence of this explanation, together with other damning facts, suggests instead that the perpetrators were rather embedded within the national secret services or an ally of them. For example his employers did not enquire as to his absence for days after he went missing and subsequently refused to cooperate with the Met Police murder investigation.

So what are the ostensible parallels with the existing case?

Well first I was struck by the uncanny facial resemblance between the two men as shown below:

Gareth Williams

Connor Reed

Gareth Williams

Connor Reed

Connor Reed

Clearly not the same person but still what one might regard as a familial likeness. Gareth Williams was 31 when he died, Connor Reed 26 so only five years divided them.  Both came from North Wales: Williams from Anglesey; Reed from neighbouring Llandudno. Both attended Bangor University. Both were linguists with at least two languages under their belt, maybe more.  Both had parents from whom they were separated by distance. Both were found dead in their rooms, the circumstances never adequately explained, although aspersions were cast on their characters in the process: in the case of Williams 'cross-dressing'; in the case of Reed 'drug-taking' - despite the absence of evidence and his earlier stated aversion to taking anti-biotics, tobacco and reliance on 'hot toddies'. Russian links were suggested to the Williams murder (probably a false trail) and Reed said he was studying Russian. Of course all these parallels could be merely coincidental.

The case of David Kelly

The well known case of David Kelly raised profound questions regarding the finding by a Judicial Enquiry under Lord Hutton rather than an Inquest, that he had committed suicide from a combination of pills and an injury to his wrist. The adequacy of the police investigation and the Inquiry process was also criticised. Its relevance to this case is that the cause of death ascribed was subsequently (2009) challenged by six eminent doctors as physically and physiological highly improbable.

The assassination of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh

This sophisticated under-cover operation by Israeli operatives was foiled in 2010. It is relevant as a proven example of making a death appear other than what it was: natural causes rather than murder. Clearly if this can be achieved, a great deal of inconvenient investigation, controversy and accusation can be avoided.

Many other cases of deaths in suspicious circumstances

Cases are legion where sudden unexplained deaths have been placed at the door of the victim, when circumstantial evidence did not support it or pointed unmistakably to a criminal act.  Professional and undetectable 'hits' have and do unquestionably take place. Is it possible that Connor Reed was the target of such by agents of either domestic or foreign agencies because of his involvement in the Coronavirus issue in China? It may appear speculative and fanciful but so it seems is the whole Coronavirus episode. Was it ever considered as a possibility and positively ruled out?

Other 'Connor Reed's

A Google or Facebook search demonstrates the name is quite a common one and includes film characters and others that have made a name for themselves in the music industry and elsewhere.

'Connor Reed' the 'Code 8' film character.

A Google search for 'Connor Reed' brings up the main character  a 'young man with special powers' in the 2016 and 2019  films called 'Code 8'. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_8_(2016_film)

Code 8 is a 2019 Canadian science fiction action film written and directed by Jeff Chan, about a man with superpowers who works with a group of criminals to raise money to help his sick mother. The film is a feature-length version of the 2016 short film of the same name. A sequel, along with a spinoff series, are in development.

The film was released theatrically on December 13, 2019. The film was released on Netflix in the United States on April 11, 2020.

We must assume there is no connection between the film character
and it's themes, with the real Connor Reed, the subject of this article despite the fact that it pushes the latter well down the list of the Google search results.

Observations and Conclusions.

So what may we conclude (if anything) from this tragic incident which the police and Coroner have determined was 'not suspicious' in character resulting from a combination of physiological and drug-related circumstances causing an 'accidental death'.

I cannot help noticing some rather strange and inexplicable features that have not been highlighted in or by the press.

1.  Conflicting dates and names.

The first and most obvious is the fact that two conflicting dates have been given for the date of his death. The first, and presumably more reliable one from the police gave it as Sunday 25th October, 2020. Latest reports give it as a day earlier on Saturday 24th.  Why has this disparity not been referred to and explained?

He was apparently found unresponsive on the floor of his room just before 10 pm on the former date. The only possible explanation for the disparity could be that he had actually died the day before and been in that situation any time since he was last seen. It is not clear who saw him last and at what time although his flat mate, Harry Rogers, gave evidence they had had a very moderate drinking session on Friday 23rd. Where that was held and what time it ended is not reported. And why in the press does his name appear as 'Reed' and 'Reid' and which is correct?

These disparities are so significant and critical, they should be explained.

2.  No estimated time of death reported.

On discovering a dead person, one of the most important techniques employed is to establish approximate time of death from post-mortem indicators, such as body temperature and signs of rigor mortis. Presumably this was done by a pathologist but it is not specifically referred to. Did a pathologist attend the scene to establish this and if not why not? If he did why was this important information not reported by the press?

3.  Lack of other important information.

For example, when Mr Reed was definitively last seen and his physical and mental health status at that time? How and by whom were his University fees being paid? How he supported his self financially since his return from Australia and whether there were any contributions from State or other organisation? Whether the student accommodation was covered by CCTV particularly at the relevant time and whether this had been checked for people movements? There is certainly no reference to it in press articles.

4.  General vagueness regarding his movements.

None of the reports nail down specifically his time line immediately prior to his trip to the far east and China and when he was there and dates given are confusing. Some reports state he had been in China for three years, others modify this to include time spent in Indonesia and elsewhere, although his father stated that his initial intention was to visit China.

It is stated he had been in his current teaching job in Wuhan for seven months which would fix his start date there as of April, 2019 - a somewhat strange time to start. Also strange is the fact that no information is provided on the school in question or of Connor's qualifications to teach the subject.

When and how had he become 'fluent in Mandarin'? This certainly suggests he had been there for more than seven months. When did he actually enter China and obtain the necessary permissions to work there?

How did he support himself financially during 20 or 21 weeks he was in enforced quarantine in China, Australia and Britain?

5.  Did Connor Reed have any links at all to the British Government?

This is an important consideration nowhere considered. Important in the context of him being at the epicentre of a world-wide pandemic and in taking a very well publicised video and media role in the reporting of it.

No one could have missed noticing the huge and coordinated propaganda exercise carried out by Britain and other western nations, often built on very suspect and misleading information. Connor it must be said was initially an important part of that which raises the valid question whether he acted alone or was influenced or advised by agencies of the State in any way?

He or others make no mention of the British Embassy or Consulate in China but presumably contact was made when fulfilling entry requirements. They are now more onerous and restrictive (See: https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china/entry-requirements#entry-rules-in-response-to-coronavirus-covid-19) but even in around 2016/17 when he first entered they could not have been inconsiderable.

Connor's only reference to the British Embassy was that "they were not particularly interested in his situation" so he must have contacted them. The question remains how reliable is this statement? Of course it could be accurate. Equally it could be a ruse to distance the Embassy from his reportage and observations, or any part in them.

So possible links with the British Government, even recruitment to a Government agency remains an open question and is not beyond the realms of possibility. In this regard the following North Wales Gazette article from 2019 could be relevant:  https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/spymasters-mi5-mi6-looking-new-16213303

6.  How was the Coroner's decision of a 'cocktail of drugs'  arrived at?

Clearly this finding was very significant in relation to finding a valid cause of death. The autopsy was said to be 'inconclusive'. None of the toxicological results were reported in detail but were unlikely to be significant as there was nothing to delay the speedy cremation of the body within two weeks of his demise.

Amazingly no evidence of drugs or alcohol were found in his room, quite inconsistent with the finding that he was a dedicated drug taker or even addict. Indeed his earlier statements that he was averse to antibiotics and did not smoke, and treated 'hot toddies' as a form of medicine, would if taken at face, seem to lean the other way.

It would seem that the finding is based on the flimsiest of reports by a fellow student that he 'obtained illegal drugs on the dark web'. This would normally be categorised as 'hearsay'.  It also has a familiar ring of mild 'character assassination' to it.  At least he was not accused of some strange fetish or sexual perversion for which we should feel grateful.

Alcohol, ecstasy and cannabis are all mentioned, but unlikely to cause death. However 'Fentanyl' is also referred to but not what toxicological evidence it was based upon.  If reliable, in the absence of any supporting evidence - packets, bottles, syringes, residues - the question must be asked how the substance got into his body?

Fentanyl is an opioid similar to morphine but 50 - 100 times more potent. It is now one of the most common overdose drugs causing death in the United States. If he was in fact in the habit of taking this drug it is unlikely that behavioural changes would not have been noticed by friends and teaching staff. Further if as seems to be claimed he took these drugs in a session on the 23rd, why were his friends not similarly affected? The fentanyl finding certainly raises lots of unanswered questions.  See: https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/fentanyl

7. If not suicide what?

The death of a healthy twenty-six year old must always raise questions. Neither evidence by his father, who spoke to him only a day before his death, or fellow students, support the conclusion that self harm or death was intended.  Only two alternatives suggest themselves other than fatal illness, the decision arrived at or the one ruled out, namely a criminal intervention by persons or persons unknown. The question is was this sufficiently considered and investigated?

As regards to illness the increase in weight indicated by photographs cannot be ignored.  The post mortem finding of 'congestion of the lungs' seems not to have been sufficiently considered particularly in the context of his previous history of untreated pneumonia.

If it was a reoccurrence - so-called 'Long Covid - we would expect him to have suffered from related symptoms beforehand such as malaise, high temperature, interference with breathing etc., none of which were reported. There seems to be no autopsy support for blood clots to heart or brain or other hepatic failure. So what else might have caused the pathological finding within the context of an acute onset?

Anaphylactic shock is a well known and dangerous, if not immediately treated, condition. It has been observed on numerous occasions as an adverse reaction to some of the novel Coronavirus 'vaccines'.  Having suffered from the virus in China, another important question not asked it seems, relates to vaccination. Had he received the AstraZeneca or Pfizer jab or jabs recently? If so could his death have been caused as an untreated anaphylaxis response to it? See: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/anaphylaxis/

8.  Conclusion.

The Coroner in summing up, admitted there were 'unanswered questions'. It is a pity that they and the evidence for the conclusions drawn, were not made more explicit.  In the end, it is the Coroner's Inquest that ensures no unexplained death goes unexamined as to cause. If the system fails we all do.

9.  Postscript. Connor's Linked In page.
