Early film of Chew Valley School from cine footage of different events, including;
Summer Fair (1963)? 0:35
Mock General Election (1963) 02:16
Casting Metal 06:11
Canoeing Trip On The Wye (1964) 08:46
Study Trip To Austria (1965) 14:53
A remarkable survival from soon after the establishment of the school, taken by a number of teachers on cine film and then transferred to CD disk. This we have now digitised and included a musical accompaniment, as a tribute to those who have left us.

1:11 Chew Valley School, located on a greenfield site between Chew Magna and Chew stoke was opened in 1958. It provided a 'Secondary Modern' education up to GCE 'O' Level, to under four hundred children who had failed the '11 Plus' examination from a wide catchment area south of Bristol, centred on the River Chew.
1:32 This first clip is of the annual 'Summer Fair' that took place in June 1963. Staff and pupils contributed to various stalls designed to raise funds for school activities. Doug Wooding the Games Master, who later became the Clerk to the Chew Magna Parish Council and tragically died prematurely, is seen supervising his flying planes.
1:41 Head Boy Chris Hicks demonstrates throwing a bucket of water at the camera man! And then a better image of Doug Wooding, a noted rugby player himself, striding into view.
2:08 A birds eye view of the drive and tennis courts used on the day as a car park. Note the various models owned by the teachers including two Morris Minors, Ford Popular and Austin A35.
2:11 1963 saw a notable General Election, when after 13 years of Tory rule, Harold Wilson and a Labour Government were returned with a narrow majority. As a major innovation, the school held a Mock Election which replicated the national result: Labour, Conservative and Liberal coming first, second and third. Here Chris Small the Labour candidate outlines his party's policies.
2:41 The Conservative candidate Ruth Pitt does the same, with her agent Andrew Milton, sitting to our right.
2:52 Tim Veater, the Liberal candidate holds forth.
4:20 Mr Cotton the woodwork teacher and Miss ….. the Domestic Science teacher act as Polling Clerks.
4:40 The three candidates looking embarrassed.
5:10 John Moore the Headmaster announcing the Election results, amidst great excitement and the three candidates giving their election speeches to the young potential of the Chew Valley, all now presumably in their late 60's and early 70's. I wonder what they all achieved from that early start?
5:47 Deputy Headmaster and disciplinarian, Mr Guard only recently passed away, imposing order on the mob!
5:60 The much loved and respected Science teacher Mr Skeeles walks past the camera with Mrs Gibson the librarian and English teacher. Both had previously worked at Pensford Primary School and made a deep impression on me. Sadly Mr Skeeles succumbed prematurely to cancer not many years after me leaving in 1966.
6:00 A clip demonstrating metal casting technique, probably filmed by Mike Greenslade the Physics and metalwork master, starring N. Crocker, M. Griffin, T. Thurford and K.Prouse.
9:17 In 1964 or '65, teacher Mike Greenslade organised a week's canoeing trip down the River Wye. For me it was one of the most memorable and enjoyable adventures and I have always been grateful for the opportunity to participate in it. The following shots capture some classic and emotional memories of youth and friendships.
10:00 Feeding time for Keith Horler, Andrew Milton, Martin Haynes, Peter Hucker, Tim Veater, Joe Smith and Chris Johnson. The lad nearest the camera was an 'A' level outward bound attachment for the trip, whose name I cannot now remember sadly. However I remember him as kind and thoughtful and we discussed the hot topic of the moment - joining the EEC. Ditto the lad at the back and on the right standing – apologies to them also.
10:38 Peter Hucker and Tim Veater negotiate the tricky business of tent erection and loading a canoe!
11:10 Joe Smith and Chris Johnson demonstrate canoeing technique.
11:25 An expert. 11:13 Peter Hucker and Tim Veater before they discovered it was better to have the heavier person at the back! 11:34 Keith Horler and unnamed.
13:10 Keith Horler emerges from his tent.
13:45 Ross on Wye boathouse. 14:21 Tim Veater and Peter Hucker having mastered the art. 14:25 Joe Brown and Chris Johnson.
14:40 Slopping out! "All hands to the mast."
15:15 The 1965 trip to Austria, organised and led by maths teacher Mr Smallbone.
15:40 Leaving Dover and sighting Calais.
16:29 A smiling Mr Smallbone emerges from the 'Venet Hotel' followed by his wife and other adults. 17:05 First sight of the Alps. 17:23 Crossing the border into Austria. `18:15 Chair lift to the top. 18:50 'Cheeky' Chris Small!
20:50 Mr Smallbone and a parent study a map.
21:15 In Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg. (Dark overtones)
24:35 Group image. (Unfortunately I don't recognise anyone.)
25:00 'Alpenzoo', Innsbruck. How times have changed?
27:40 Pupils on lake steamer. Keith Horler to rear left and close-up @ 27:55 with I believe his father behind him. Sorry I don't recognise anyone else.
13:40 Andrew Milton on the right.
32:40 Mr Smallbone and wife.
33:00 Setting off back across the English Channel.
34:40 Andrew Milton and friend (brother?) and group photograph at the end of the trip.
END.
