I was very proud of my brother, ten years old than me, who at 16 became a police cadet in the Bristol Constabulary in 1956. At one stage he was commended for apprehending a thief by a Judge who called him 'astute'! He also appeared on the BBC 9 o'clock news rescuing a woman from the Avon Gorge cliffs besides other acts of bravery. Many years later he retired with the rank of Chief Superintendent, unusually never becoming a member of the Free Masons, which was an achievement in itself! I am saddened by the way in which the traditions of Peel's invention have been traduced over the years by its leaders and turned into a militarist, corporate, partisan political entity, prepared to apply brutal force against peaceful demonstrators as was witnessed in Trafalgar Square recently. We have a new style of policing now and the public or Parliament was never consulted over the transformation. The change in uniform represents a change in philosophy and practice, and we should all bewail what we have lost.
